The winding, hilly, single-trail into Huddart Park from Raymunndo Road is a vital link in the Woodside Trails system, yet like an orphaned stepchild it has been passed from on e public guardian to another over the years. In 1982, San Mateo County took over the trail easement on Jim and Janet Estep’s property from the State of California, but soon had to relocate the trail due to erosion. Most of the new trail tread was moved beyond the original easement, onto what is now Alan and Melinda Fitch’s property. Due to sloping, switchback terrain, this trail required more protective maintenance than the County was able to provide, and in 2004 the Board of Supervisors voted to close the trail.
Alarmed at the thought of this access being lost, the Esteps and the Fitches worked with Woodside Town Staff to prevent the closure by getting the County to transfer the easement and maintenance responsibility to the trail are more grateful to all involved- especially to the Fitches and the Esteps. This generously cooperative effort has proven to be a wonderful 50th Anniversary gift to all citizens of Woodside.
