The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County came into being March 31, 1942, four months after Pearl Harbor Day. San Mateo County had many miles of rough, country and unprotected coastline accessible only on horseback. Military support and protection against subversion were the principle needs that provoked the founding of the Patrol. In the decades since, community service has occupied the Patrol to an ever-increasing extent. Equestrian-related events sponsored by the Mounted Patrol include: The Fourth of July Junior Rodeo, team penning and sorting, the San Mateo County Horsemen's Association Show, the NCEFT Poker Ride, the Sheriff's STAR program and Western Riding Clinics. The Mounted Patrol Foundation, a 501c3 Charitable foundation, has been instrumental in raising over $100,000 to fund trail improvements including All Weather Trails in Huddart Park, the Green Gables Trail, the Crystal Springs Trail and donations to the Woodside Trails Committee. The Woodside Trails Committee wishes to recognize the Mounted Patrol for the many years of support for the trails system and equestrian activities.
